I recently received a Certificate of Appreciation from the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) online program and the UNDP. This recognition was for my contribution as a volunteer to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It was a proud and fulfilling moment for me.
As a Special Educator, I work every day to support children with special needs. My job has always been about making a difference in someone’s life. When I saw the opportunity to volunteer with the UN online, I knew it was a way to extend my efforts beyond the classroom.
The project I joined was an Online English Conversation Program. I helped non-native English speakers improve their confidence and communication skills. The participants came from different backgrounds and countries. We connected through video calls and had simple conversations on topics like daily life, goals, and culture.
What made this experience enriching was the mutual learning. While I guided them in speaking better English, I also learned a lot about their lives, values, and challenges. It reminded me how powerful communication is in building bridges between people.
The UN online volunteering program gave me a global platform to share my skills. It also helped me grow personally and professionally. I became more patient, empathetic, and better at explaining things clearly – qualities that are also valuable in my work as a Special Educator.
Through this program, I felt connected to a global mission. Volunteering online from my own home, I still felt like I was doing something meaningful for the world. It showed me that no effort is too small when it comes to creating positive change.
I am thankful to the UNV and UNDP for this opportunity and for the certificate. It’s not just a piece of paper – it is a reminder that service and learning can go hand in hand. I hope more educators and professionals like me will explore UN online volunteering. It’s a beautiful way to give back while continuing to learn and grow.
